Alfred Whiteley A.R.C.A. 1928 – 2004

Alfred Whiteley was born in November 1928 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. After attending  the local grammar school, Tapton House, he went to the Chesterfield School of Art and became the first member of his family to complete further education when he won a place at the Royal College of Art in 1949.  He completed the three year course becoming and Associate the College in 1952 of Art.

He married fellow painter Ottoline Reynolds in 1954 and had a son Benjamin[deceased] and daughter Helen. He went into teaching and was Head of Art for many years at the Grammar School (Glyn) in Ewell, Surrey, England during which time he continued to paint on a part time commercial basis

After receiving a major award as a painter in oil  from the UK Arts Council in 1977 he left teaching to become a full time painter. Over the following years he produced many works which sold nationally and internationally through galleries in London and New York.  A significant number of paintings are still in the possession of his family which are shown on this website.

Alfred Whiteley lived in Lower Kingswood Surrey from 1962 where he continued to paint until his death in 2004.
